After graduation, she worked as a page for CBS News, 48 Hours, and the Late Show, eventually becoming an associate producer on segments for correspondent Erin Moriarty.[3] Deciding she wasn't "much of a news hound", she was hired as a Letterman office worker, helping to handle his charities and his Indy car racing team.[3] Working with Letterman in this capacity led to her first appearances on The Late Show, in which Letterman would call her in her office during the show. These phone calls eventually led to her interviewing Survivor castoffs, asking them "Did you see or touch any monkeys?" much to the feigned displeasure of Letterman. Birkitt appeared during the "CBS Mailbag" segment numerous times donning costumes, sometimes related to a specific ongoing festival or event. As herself, she gave on-air reports from the sites of the Winter Olympics in 2002 and in 2006. Her work eventually landed her a coveted position as an assistant to David Letterman, who invited Birkitt to join her for short bits on the show. She became a Late Show fixture in 2000, making appearances as the character "Vicky" or "Monty" and during various segments like the CBS News mailbag. Birkitts time at CBS also landed her a longtime live-in boyfriend, CBS News producer Robert Joe Halderman, 51. She reportedly dated Halderman for two years and lived with him in his Connecticut home until the summer of 2009. During the time Birkitt was living with Halderman, she was also conducting an affair with her boss, the TV show personality David Letterman, 61. The affair reportedly ended before Letterman took his vows with his girlfriend of two decades Regina Lasko (also a former Letterman staffer) in March 2009. The public may have never known of the goofy-eyed, gap-toothed talk show hosts romantic liaisons if it hadnt been for Halderman trying to make a quick buck ($2 million to be exact) off of his lady love's infidelities.
