Today's UPGRADES include: InterMune (ITMN) upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Wells Fargo. Analog Devices (ADI) upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Bernstein. Global Payments (GPN) upgraded to Positive from Neutral at Susquehanna. DOWNGRADES: J.Crew (JCG) downgraded to Hold from Buy at Citigroup.. Vale SA (VALE) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at UBS. FPIC Insurance (FPIC) downgraded to Perform from Outperform at Oppenheimer. Hot News: Abbott Labs (ABT) acquired Facet Biotech (FACT) for $27 per share, or approximately $450M, to enhance Abbott's early and mid-stage pharmaceutical pipeline. InterMune (ITMN) announced that the FDAs Pulmonary-Allergy Drugs Advisory Committee voted 9-3 to recommend approval of Esbriet for the treatment of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis to reduce decline in lung function. EA SPORTS, a label of Electronic Arts (ERTS), announced that EA SPORTS Active 2.0 is now in development and will be available this fall on PlayStation3 (SNE), Wii (NTDOY), the iPhone (AAPL) and the iPod touch. Acacia Research Corp. (ACTG) announced that a subsidiary has acquired rights to 48 US patents, 72 foreign counterparts, and associated applications from a leading international research institute. H&R Block's fiscal first-quarter loss widened slightly, as costs from a takeover more than offset other expense cuts and an unusual profit in business services. Biogen Idec said today it had offered to acquire Facet Biotech, a partner in developing multiple sclerosis and cancer drugs, in a deal valued at about $355 million. CIT Group said it has extended the contract of Chief Executive Jeffrey Peek for one year, even though his decisions to expand into risky businesses helped to push the lender to the brink of bankruptcy. Toshiba plans to bid for French nuclear group Areva's power transmission and distribution unit in a deal that could top $5 billion. Google announced that its China president, Kai-Fu Lee, is leaving the company to work on his own venture. Lee was the center of a legal fight when he left Microsoft in 2005 to join Google. The G20 will promise this weekend to keep economic support packages in place until recovery is certain and seek to reassure financial markets they have credible plans to withdraw the stimulus when appropriate.
3/10/2010-Shares of Facet Biotech Corp. (NASDAQ:FACT) are trading 66.2% higher to $26.94 Wednesday after Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:ABT) agreed to buy the biotechnology company for $27 a share, for a net transaction value of about $450 million, enhancing Abbott's early and mid stage pharmaceutical pipeline. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2010.
March 10, 2010: 8:15 AM ET --- US stock futures are trading higher Wednesday as investors await M&A news and wholesale inventory data. Wholesale inventories for January are due for release today. In corporate news, Facet Biotech (NASDAQ:FACT) may be in the spotlight on news that Abbott Laboratories is purchasing the company for $722 million. The Children's Place Retail Stores (NASDAQ:PLCE) reported fiscal Q4 EPS of $1.03, ex-items,inline with consensus estimates. Revenues for the quarter rose 5% year-over-year to $462.8 million, inline with the consensus estimates. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) futures are trading 6.00 points above fair value, the S&P500 (INX) futures are trading 0.60 points above fair value, and the Nasdaq Composite (IXIC) futures are trading 3.25 points above fair value.
